East Middle School Cross Country

Welcome Titan runners! We are excited to begin a new season of cross country, one of the most challenging yet rewarding of sports. Here is some information to help us kick off our season.

What is cross country? It is running across the countryside! You get to be out in the fall sunshine (occasionally rain - even snow, once!) and see the leaves change. We run races of two (2) miles, on varied terrain. We are in the South Division of the COMSAC (Central Oakland Middle School Athletic Conference). The participating cross country teams are East, Anderson (Berkley), Detroit Country Day, Power, and Hazel Park. There is a North Division (Birmingham, Bloomfield, West Bloomfield, Cranbrook) but we do not see them except for at the Oakland County Meet and the final League Meet.

Girls and boys will run separate races, except for the large multi-school meets, where there will be races for the seven fastest girls, the seven fastest boys, and an Open race for boys and girls.

Pay to Play: 6th graders must pay $100, and 7th and 8th graders must pay $150 to participate in FPS athletics. This covers the entire year, no matter how many sports an athlete is involved in.

Daily Schedule: We will practice Monday through Friday from 2:30 until 4:00, unless otherwise announced. We will run in the neighborhoods around East or on the East track. We will not practice on the day of a meet. On meet days, students will wait at school for the team bus to come to take them to the course.

Attendance: Obviously, an athlete needs to be present in order to improve and contribute to the team. If a runner must miss practice or a meet, parents should contact a coach before that date. Also, Mrs. Brooks and Mr. Burr are available at East almost every day, so a runner can talk directly to one of them.

Transportation: Runners are responsible for rides home after practice. Practice will end by 4:00, and rides should be arriving by this time. Students will be supervised by the coaches until 4:00.

Meets: A bus will take runners from East to the meet and then back to East. If a parent would like to drive his or her runner directly home from the meet, the parent must inform one of the coaches. We would rather keep the team together as much as possible until everyone has finished running. It is a big boost to the runners in the late race to have their teammates who ran earlier out on the course cheering.

Attire: Runners should have work-out clothes and running shoes (not court shoes). They can change in the locker rooms after school. We will run in most kinds of weather, so runners should be prepared. Team members will be given an East uniform to be worn at meets. Runners should have warmups or some clothing to wear over running clothes on meet days, as there can be down time before races.

Weather: Again, cross country is not generally canceled unless there are thunderstorms. If a practice or meet is canceled, an announcement will be made before school dismissal.

Diet: Athletes need fuel to burn. Please make sure you eat a nutritious breakfast and lunch. Runners will have access to water on practice days, but you are certainly welcome to bring your own. You will need to supply any water you might want at meets.

Health Information: No athlete may participate until he or she has had an up-to-date physical and turned the form in to the coaches. Forms are available from the coaches and also on the FPS website,

Let’s this make this a fun and successful season! Everyone has a role to play. Athletes are to practice hard and to participate in meets. Coaches are to make all decisions involving the team. Parents are to encourage every athlete and to exemplify good sportsmanship. We are looking forward to working with your son or daughter this fall. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact us.
